One of the more popular games these days involve creating fantasy teams from various sports like football or baseball. A group of a variable number of people can make their own league, with each member creating his own fantasy team consisting of favorite players. In fantasy baseball, each member of the so-called league manages an invented roster consisting of real baseball players from the Major League.
Each player of fantasy baseball is required to create a complete team of positions, and all the members compete against each other based on the real players’ achievements in real competitions. The winner of fantasy baseball is the player whose team gathers the most points at the end of the Major League Baseball tournaments, based on the statistics that each real player has accomplished. Fantasy baseball is among the most complicated and difficult games of its genre, and most time-consuming as well, because just one season of MLB consists of 162 games.
One of the first versions of fantasy baseball was created in 1961 for an IBM computer, by an engineer named John Burgeson. The computer game was even commercialized for a while, and it allowed for the management of two teams which competed against each other based on random statistics. Since then, there have been several types of fantasy baseball, including radio games or baseball card games – with each card representing a baseball player and his game statistics up to that point. The latter game allowed holders to use their cards to create teams and compete against each other that way.
In the beginnings of the phenomenon, certain types of fantasy baseball were called “chickens”, and the game started becoming more and more popular, predominantly in the United States. It soon started to take its place in modern culture and some artists even included it in their works, like famous comic novel writer Robert Coover, who wrote The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Vaugh, Prop.; his novel satirized the idea of creationism and man playing god. In 2006 it was discovered that artists not only included fantasy baseball in their works, but they played it too, like the controversial author Jack Kerouac, who apparently played his own version of fantasy football ever since he was a kid, continuing throughout his adult life as well.
The most used scoring system used in Fantasy Football is called “Rotisserie” and it involves creating a team of players before the season begins and then follow each player’s statistics during the season, compiling the points each of them gathers. The difficulty of the game consists in the inconsistence of the players’ performances, possible injuries or health issues and so on, making the end results very unpredictable.
